Fruit and not a sunflower in sight .....

Now consumed with guilt that I have been neglectful of late in the upkeep and maintenance of Sally'sChateau so a huge 'sorreeeeeeeeee' to all of those I know (or don't as the case may be) who peek in on a regular basis.

So many excuses I won't even attempt to start to explain, let's just say yours truly has been kept fully occupied. Mind you as you can see I've had time to slice up some fruit. Amazing what an ice breaker this can be in hospital when diced up and arranged, re-arranged and photographed at least fifty times. Blown up (the picture not the fruit) de-sized and generally jiggled and juggled. And then 'Bob's your Uncle' visiting time has flown by.

The latest guests came laden with trays of the most beautiful fresh fruit hot from Barcelona, see how seamlessly I can move on ? the largest juiciest most delectable melons you ever did see (can I say that these day's or has that been banned by bureaucracy gone mad ?) rows and rows of bright red plump tomatoes, proud, fat and purple onions packed in side by side, strawberries gleaming and glistening in punnets, golden kiwi fruit bristling together and the magnificent beasts with their spiky hairdo's the pineapple's. I was handed one of each and was soon staggering under the weight of such a treasure trove of goodies.

'Thank you' I said, well Gracias actually, 'but could I just ask what English produce you buy' ? which was a fair enough query as he was one of Barcelona's main importers/exporters of fruit and veg. There was a pause whilst he considered this.

'Well' he said 'what have you got apart from the Bramley Apple' ? !!

Don't get me onto the subject of the decline of the beautiful English orchards and fruit farms.

NB: All the fruit shown is from Le Chateau, you can take the girl out of the fruit farm but not the fruit farm out of the girl !!

Nothing beats English Strawberries or Scottish Raspberries, the Cox is unsurpassed by any apple, and as for pears, gooseberries, any colour currant you can imagine ....

Evesham is my home town, I feel the same way about UK fruit.

You will be exhausted that this rate, take care of yourself x

Don't make me envious of what you produce. They look gorgeous. We have gooseberries - sweet black ones, pears and greengages (if the tree ever bore fruit). Is it a mirabelle you've got there?

To fully appreciate this post you have to have a digital camera, be sitting visiting a patient for hours on end with a pile of fruit in front of you ! Okey so the lemon was not from the garden and had just been squeezed over some smoked salmon. I haven't been out much of late.

Ooh those figs! I've only got gooseberries in my allotment and a rather tatty bramley apple in the garden, great for sitting under but not much fruit. (The apple tree not the gooseberrybush.) It's best to avoid sitting under a gooseberry bush.

So your Barcelona fruit man is missing Scottish raspberries and tayberries, russett and cox pippin apples, rhubarb, Jersey new potatoes? Ah well, we'd better just eat it all up ourselves.
Dear Sally, make sure you are keeping healthy too...

What fantastic produce! I always remember being asked by a somwewhat ignorant Frenchman once whether or not we grew apples in England. (I'm sure there would be many equally ignorant English people). I love reading about all the old varieties and orchards, my husband is from Kent and his family used to be fruit farmers.

I wish I ate more fruit. It's supposed to be good for you isn't it! Give me a bar of dairy milk any day. And a big juicy apple to keep the dentist at bay!

Crystal xx
Well at the risk of sending you off on the homesick trail again..there were figs, lemons, oranges, avocados all ther in Dorset ...at Mapperton....and we saw sooooo many orchards on the way down through the Welsh border..all is not yet lost!

For your delightful Spanish guests: "The greengages are making the trees positively sag here, my poor old Victoria will break yet another limb while in the hedgerows the wild damsons are beginning to glow blackly purple, the sloes are swelling and the blackberries - well it's a bumper crop we'll be having this year!"
Do hope the fruit did the trick - it's either that or sudoku....!!!!!

Luscious!! We have blackberries, McIntosh and Spy apples, green and purple plums and a pear tree with no pears.
We've just planted a Cox Orange Pippen - in memory of an English friend of many years ago who longed for the taste of one!

Look, I'm slavering over your fresh figs too - you describe food so sensuously!

Seriously, and along with everyone else, with your very busy life looking after everyone else I do hope you are finding a few moments here and there to recharge your batteries.
