Heatwave hits Britain

I soooooo do not need to hear that Britain is having a heatwave and that everyone I speak to is enjoying al fresco lunches and sipping pimms whilst languishing in the balmy silken evening air.

Have you any idea how difficult MY life is when it rains ? What do you say to bewildered guests when the weather doesn't do as it is supposed to, 'you should be in England' ?

This morning saw torrential rain following winds yesterday that nearly pulled me out the windows trying to close the shutters. I smiled brightly at my guests. 'I've never known anything like this' I say in what I sincerely hope is in an incredulous fashion. Left me with rather a problem this morning though. Do I donn an old Barbour coat and slosh down the drive in hunter wellies or do I breezily hop into the car clad in summer clothes ? I decide to put on a brave front which was a mistake as someone had left the window open all night and I suffer a soggy derrière for my supermarket shop.

But how can one be downhearted for long simply because of some silly unseasonal weather ?

All you have to do is link arms with your beloved, saunter down a chestnut tree lined drive with your faithful black Labrador and collect fallen logs for a blazing log fire accompanied by a glass of local robust red.

Simple.

Don't worry Sally - everything in France is tinged with that gloss of French glamour. Even the rain is probably more interesting than rain anywhere else! Lucky guests - remind them that the weather over here is miserable and doesn't have any Gallic charm at all!

Not a good moment to tell you we have had gloorious heat up here then? No thought not, sorry.

Not a hint of rain here Sally, have been sipping fizzy white in an absolutely scorching garden all afternoon. It looks like it's going to last for ages and ages too.

Well I never! To be honest, we've had crappy weather up here in Northumberland - foggy and drizzle this afternoon so I will promise not to laugh!!

Yes, Sally - I would suggest cracking open a bouteille or two of some lovely warming local vin rouge and chucking a couple of logs on the fire. It won't be long before it's summer again in the Languedoc.

(And if it's any consolation, it's actually a bit TOO hot today. Was heartily wishing for a bit of a breeze at one point. And no Pimms in sight - sadly)

Bonjour Sally,

My apologies for not visiting recently, just trying to catch up.

Weather here for me is too hot Sally, don't think we are used to hot weather here in England, it's usually so cold.

Crack open a bottle of the Rose Bubbly, and enjoy the warmth of the log fire, the sun will come out sooner than you think Sally. I love the picture you put up, just by looking at this it would not matter if it rained.

Ah, sigh.....just soooo hot here that simply nothing to do but give in, collapse on a deckchair and sip very very chilled Pimms.
Sorry, I'm a total cow, aren't I? But WW SO has a point - all those pool tales.....
Thing is, you even make pouring rain sound fabulous at the Chateau!

Yes the difference is next Thursday it'll be snowing here, followed by more floods, then a little chink of sun, followed by gale force wins. Give me the odd French rain anyday!

Oh dear Lord, robust red how I crave thee just now! Ah wel, only x hours till the sun shift indolently over the yardarm. Hope you are back in the land of sun now Sally xx

Oh dear, I'm trying to feel sorry for you Sally, I really am, but failing. Chestnut-lined avenues and fallen logs and glasses of robust red, harumph. Even in the rain and wind that sounds too lovely for words! And is that you - blonde? I had you down as dark. Another one completely wrong!
Tell me about it! I had my Dad and his very loud wife visiting a couple of weeks ago and they were stuck in the house because of the rain! She drove me mad! Look on the bright side though, doesn't everything look beautiful and green. Bon Courage Debs x

Looks perfect to me! I so envy doing something TOGETHER with your beloved. It's all I've ever wanted, running a vineyard in France or something. I feel so disconnected from my husband's world sometimes - and the worst is, I have no desire to be involved. It's just so not my scene. Accountancy I mean! Sigh.

Ps, VERY hot does not exist here in the frozen north. Had a bikini on on Sunday but that was a first! The rest has been reasonably sunny but pretty chilly round the knees and ankles, I can tell you.
