Last minute holiday France

August is passing by in a blur of parties, same as July and June if I'm utterly honest, probably stretching back to May even. Le Chateau is in full swing with a wonderful pianist this week bravely trying and pull out a noteworthy tune on the old piano.

I announced the other night that His Lordship and I would be going on a little last minute holiday together. This was after the Belgian TV crew had invaded us and I was forced to bite my lip lest I said something I might later regret. You have no idea how hard that was for me. But goodness, I digress. Oh you should have seen the two little pairs of eye's light up as they contemplated Mummy dearest out of the way. I could sense fingers twitching for the keys of MSN and the buttons of the mobile phones. 'I won't be going far' I gave a little titter.

Suddenly to the little darlings horror a caravan of a distinguished age drew up on the front drive and was parked very neatly just below the kitchen balcony. A caravan for two people only with a jolly striped awning to keep the sun off us as we sip a glass or two and plot our escape. I have great plans for it's refurbishment and decor, Le Petit Chateau, available for people of discerning taste who want to recapture the great outdoors and their free spirit without the discomfort of camping. I'm talking beautiful thick cotton sheets, lovely china, linen napkins, sleek cutlery and soft furnishing to drool over. Meanwhile the guests abandon Le Chateau as the sun moves over the yardarm to giggle and declare it all terribly good fun as we all swop stories gathered round 'Mummy's latest embarrassment'.

Meanwhile despite all the jollity I'm still at my station of work and I'm dollydaydreaming of a short break somewhere near the Mediterranean coast, a proper last minute holiday in France sans computer, phone and every other distraction.

Escape though as everyone knows is harder than it first appears.

Oooh can I come please? In serious need of some sun. We used to have a real old banger caravan. We used to just bung in child, food and dogs and take off. It was a serious minger and was regarded with utter distain by all the owners of the latest models. Magic.
We had an old caravan for many years ...the snobbery on British caravan sites has to be experienced to be believed ....You will have a wonderful time under the srtipey awning I'm sure.

Please leave description of sun in your next posting - it's been so long I've forgotten what it looks like! Love the sound of your caravan - please let us know how it goes.

Mmm thats the kind of caravan I like! Ours is not too bad, but husband uses it for rallys and it isnt very feminine!

I've never stayed in a caravan, tents yes, caravan no. It sounds like fun. I think it would be best to put your teenagers in a cattery or some such place. Whatever happens don't leave them on their own at home. One day I will blog about what happened when we left our four boys at home without us for a week. It took me years to recover and even now they let little stories slip out.

Sally, all I can say is that I so hope that you do have a holiday. Let someone else do the running around, and the preparing, and the thinking ahead, and during and after.

This from someone who might just have a glimmer of what you do every single day, based on what I do day after day at the shop.

I'm sure Le Petit Chateau will look divine too. I think I require your vision to transform a rather malevolent little boat!

Thanks for your kind words on my post - I'm feeling quite down in the dumps at the moment so it was much appreciated.

You make it sound such fun there, Sally, I'm sure we'll all be queuing up to come over. Can you waft some of that sunshine this way, please?
We have been to busy for a proper holiday this summer, but have just recently rented a cottage by the sea in October. Edward is coming, too and we are all ready!!

I like the sound of your caravan Sally. Have a great holiday break, when you manage to go.

Just popped back to say, as I wrestle with beds and towels, that I am seriously fed up with living in a unpaid hotel! Escape is certainly not easy! All respect to you for always sounding so gracious about life at Le Chateau.

Your caravan sounds idyllic and I hope you manage to take your holiday soon.

After all your hard work, I'm sure you need it.

Somehow 'caravan' sounds so much more exotic and holiday-fit than 'trailer' which is what they're called over here. A stripey awning is just the thing as I know that you couldn't possibly have anything - even a caravan - that was anything less than perfection.
