The unvarnished TRUTH of life at Le Chateau

Someone has dared criticise my blog. 'You're too damn cheerful' they have said, 'why don't you just tell it how it is sometimes' ?

I lay in the bath having the water as hot and deep as I dared and stared gloomily at the heavy pattering of rain on the fragile window panes. Outside the wind was whipping the trees ferociously and I wondered just how well the enormous line of washing was coping. I could hear the shutters banging in the distance. Nobody had thought to secure them as yesterday we had a heatwave. That's H E A T W A V E. Instead of taking the opportunity to do nothing I had spent a large part of the day shovelling washing in the machine, a non stop process of washing, pegging on line, and careful folding onto Aga, all done (un) cheerfully. Afterwards towards the end of the afternoon I rewarded myself with a lie down on one of the sunbeds where I promptly dozed off in the gorgeous warmth. When I awoke I was in the shade whilst His Lordship basked in the sun. I was pleased (not).

We decided to take part in Earth Hour 2008, this involved everyone sitting by candlelight whilst I struggled to put supper on the table. We then sat by the flickering light and wondered if our supply of candles would last the hour. All around us the lights of the village blazed. To jolly it up a bit (not) we had a debate on badgers. Don't ask.

Up with the lark for our new guests. Now we must be doing something right because this has got to be their 7th or 8th visit to Le Chateau. Everything was ticking over nicely only we had of course gone forward an hour which means we had lost an hour depending on whether you want jolly or gloomy. Still look on the bright side our guest was bringing over a delicious box of the very best Belgian chocolates, and I mean the VERY best, naturally.

Only he wasn't, because he cancelled at the very last minute, only I didn't pick up the message on the computer until I had made every last bed, dusted every last corner and arranged every last flower, lovingly.

Life's a beach ain't it ?

PS. During Earth Hour my last Cadbury's Cream Egg went missing.

PPS. Goes without saying, naturally, that whatever the weather (and lets be honest it's usually divine) visitors to Le Chateau receive only the warmest welcome, with or without a box of Belgian chocolates !!

Well at least you are ahead for the next guest! But take no notice of the miserable **** that accused you of being too cheerful- I have told you, dear: the magic of your blogs (and of Le Chateau) is that you can ALWAYS see the beauty in every moment- its a gift-
I wonder who nicked the egg...talk about the last straw breaking the camels back ...ooops no Sally I did not mean you are a camel,,,honest

No sorry - still doesn't that tough!

Really Sally - you can't fight your own nature....and if it's cheery you are, then cheery you will be - even when having a teensy weensy bit of an off day. Your readers must realize that life can't possibly always be a bowl of Belgian chocolates. Sometimes it rains, and often it's very hard work - you just rise above it all and press on. I love your attitude - it must account for repeat visitors to your gorgeous home.

It still sounds divine - but who stole the creme egg?

the egg? have you searched the bins for the wrapper? Sally, old fruit, don't tell the punters what life is REALLY like for gawd's sake! Views, wine, sunflowers.................
Berlummey guests canceling and letting you down . . . don't you just hate that - then again as they are returning visitors it was probably something serious that caused them to cancel.

Oh no not your last creme egg been nicked . . .

And just to rub salt in the wound we are having glorious sunshine here today and we ate the last of our chocolate last night.

Sally,

I do send you sympathy on the loss of the egg!

I can't imagine that anyone thought that the glories of the chateau happen by magic, or that little elves take care of everything. Or am I wrong, is there magic and are there elves?

Part of your immense talent is the skill with which you continue to send us warm, sophisticated descriptions of the wonderful time that any Guest might expect to have at that marvelous chateau.

You are amazing! xo

oh dear, now I feel responsible for the missing creme egg!

I did laugh at you washing everything in sight, I did something very similar a couple of weeks ago when we had 3 days of summer type weather (most bizarre), and I loaded the contents of the upstairs into the washer! Why do we do this?

Well for one thing, I can still smell the sunshine on the curtains.

Oooh, mystery of the missing egg... Wonder where it will turn up? And ignore that miserable so-and-so who suggested you were too cheery. You can't be too cheery in the tourism business, and you're an excellent advert for your gorgeous chateau. Smile on, Sally - especially now you won't need to make up the beds for the next log - chocolates or no chocolates.

xx
